Not all leadership lessons come from great mentors or shining examples.
Some come from the opposite.

Early in my executive career, I was invited to a high-stakes leadership meeting. It was the kind of meeting that younger me would’ve seen as “arrival.”
I walked in proud.
I walked out changed.

What I saw in that room shook me—not because it was exciting, but because it was empty of everything I believed leadership should be.
The leader ran the room with power—not presence.
• Control—not collaboration.
• Fear—not trust.
• Ideas were shut down.
• Voices were silenced.
• People nodded because they had to—not because they agreed.

In that 20 minutes, I saw the kind of leader I never wanted to become.
And I made a decision.

From that day forward, I would:

• Lead with humility
• Build trust through action
• Encourage every voice at the table
• Leave space for others to grow

That meeting became a line in the sand—a defining moment in how I would show up, forever.

Because authentic leadership isn’t about the seat you hold—it’s about the space you create for others.
